September 29 discussion of Laudato Si’ – sign-up and more
NOTE - There is an updated ZOOM CODE
As already announced, our Parish’s discussions surrounding the fifth anniversary year of the environmental encyclical Laudato Si’: On Care for our Common Home begin on Tuesday evening, September 29, via Zoom from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. To join the Zoom session, click on https://us02web.zoom.us/j/88021607474?pwd=WGNKMzBQSUpTR3hFYmx4ZEszLzQ0Zz09 a few minutes before 7 p.m. on the 29th. If it doesn’t work, here are the meeting ID (880 2160 7474) and password (696971). All parishioners are welcome and urged to participate! Here are two ways to prepare: A short summary of Laudato Si’ is available at http://ignation.ca/2020/09/17/thoughts-laudato-si-environmental-social-encyclical-pope-francis/. It is based on a homily on the encyclical in November 2015. The essential preparation is to watch Laudato Si: A Canadian Perspective. This 35-minute documentary is available free on-line at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Gpkci-aPiQ (or just type the title into your browser). It is also linked below, at the bottom of this message. It was made soon after the encyclical was published and features interviews with ten Canadian figures from both religious and secular contexts. The first announcement asked you to think about what you find especially striking in it, and points that you’d like to have explored further. Here’s a further question: how does the encyclical change your thinking?
As moderator, I will make sure that everyone has a chance to speak.
Special guests will contribute to the discussion and answer questions: John Dorner, the head of the Care of Creation program of the Archdiocese; the filmmaker, Kevin Moynihan; St. Basil’s parishioner Jim Ramsay to answer science questions; Father Daryold; and members of our parish Green Team.
This program has been chosen to refresh and extend our knowledge of the encyclical during the Season of Creation that is being celebrated in our Parish. It also lays the groundwork for future sessions, still being planned, that will dig deeper into practical applications of Laudato Si’ in our personal lives, our Parish, and the wider world.
A final note: St. Basil’s is partnering with Canadian Martyrs Parish in these sessions, so you’ll meet some new faces and voices on your computer screen!
